Lasik Eye Surgery to Improve Eyesight
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is an operation that permanently alters the shape of the cornea to help you improve your eyesight. It is convenient and a quite popular elective surgery for improving eyesight without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Over a million Lasik procedures are performed in the United States each year. About 80% of your eye's focusing is done by the cornea, a rounded, clear covering at the front of the eye. By changing the shape of your cornea you can alter how light is focused on the retina, making a blurry image into a clear image. The Lasik procedure is performed with an excimer laser. This is a laser that operates in the ultra-violet range and has enough power to disintegrate a narrow area of cells without burning adjacent cells. Lasik surgery starts when the surgeon makes a flap in the covering layer of the cornea so it can be folded over, exposing the inner tissue. The excimer laser then disintegrates or vaporizes specific cornea tissue, reshaping the cornea. The flap is then restored and the eye is allowed to head. Lasik surgery is not without complications, however. Somewhere between 31% to 48% of patients report dry eye problems. Others experience disturbances such as spherical aberratiion. About 1% of patients experience some degree of post operative infection. While more than 90% of patients initially report 20/20 vision after Lasik surgery, clarity of vision may not last indefinitely. Your eyes may continue to change as you age and you may eventually need glasses again. People with diseases that make healing difficult or slow, like HIV or diabetes, are not good candidates of Lasik. Also, people with severe myopia do less well with Lasik. As with any operation, you should be confident that you have chosen the best surgeon available. As with most procedures, surgeons who perform more Lasik procedures usually have fewer patients with complications. It would be wise to select a board certified ophthalmologist rather than simply a Lasik eye surgeon. Lasik, like artificial lenses addresses the problem of improper focusing of images on the retina. It, does not, however, address the problem of why your eye does not focus properly. For those with myopia or nearsightedness, the eye is too long. Farsights have eyes that are too short. Lasik does not solve this problem. Only by relearning proper vision habits and by practicing eye relaxing exercises can you permanently cause your chronically tense eye muscles to relax. This allows your eye to return to a natural spherical shape and restores proper vision. If you want to permanently improve eyesight, natural vision therapy is the best method.
