Improve Eyesight with the Long Swing

The long swing (sometimes called the elephant swing or bear swing) will help relax your external eye muscles and improve your eyesight.

We are all used to looking at one thing then quickly shifting our eyes to look at another. The effect of this is to stare at one thing, then stare at another.

We hardly ever allow our eyes to smoothly, steadily swing from one location to another. Yet, when we do, we can relax our eyes and improve our eyesight.

To do this exercise, stand with your feet about a foot apart. Let your arms hang loosely at your side. Let your shoulders relax. Relax your jaw muscles so your jaw is loose. Keep your tongue relaxed. Your head should be square with your shoulders.

Now rotate your shoulders and upper body to the left. Your head should move with your shoulders. Let your right heal come up if that feels natural. Your shoulders, head, and eyes should be turned to your left. Your arms may swing to follow your upper body.

Now rotate your shoulders and upper body back through the center and on to the right. Lift your left heal if that seems natural. Your shoulders, head, and eyes should be turned to your right. Your arms may swing around to follow your upper body.

Keep rotating to the left and right ever couple of seconds. Make the motion smooth and relaxed.

If you are doing this correctly you should see the objects in your room or in the environment smoothly move by as you rotate your upper body.

As you rotate to the left, you should see the objects move to your right, in the opposite direction of your swing. If your eyes jump from one object to another you won't see the objects moving smoothly.

I found when I first tried this exercise that I saw the object move smoothly at I rotated to my right. But, when I rotated back to my left my eyes jumped from one object to another.

I solved this problem by putting one hand to my nose and pointing straight out, directly away from my nose. I then looked in the direction my finger was pointing. Then I did the swing very slowly and I saw the objects of my room smoothly move by as I rotated in both directions.

When you do the long swing you may be amazed that you see the objects very clearly as they move past. You may also note that your eyes feel very relaxed while doing the swing.

The long swing is probably one of the fastest ways of relaxing your eye muscles.

If forces you not to stare, to keep your eyes moving from one object to another.

The long swings illustrates one of the habits that will improve your eyesight: keep your eyes moving and don't stare.
